5K Run/Walk - Plus 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk
Location: La Mirada Regional Park - La Mirada, CA
The sun was peaking through the clouds on a perfect morning. FOX11 broadcast their weather cast from the park. The Lupus Race for Life had reached a new record-over 2900 participants. In addition to the many police and fire personnel running/walking there were families, friends and co-workers out in force to support their loved ones with lupus.
In fact, this was the largest crowd to gather at one time in support of this disease-a big thank you to everyone who joined us. Whether you ran or walked your presence made this event special. It showed lupus patients and their families that you care and are willing to make a difference.
Some went the extra distance and helped raise money and awareness. These are our extraordinary teams and individuals who have made a positive impact: Catherine's Superstars, Team Kari, Super Lupers, Red Dawn, Lupie Lovers, Greene Machine, Hernandez Fam Bam, Fighting for Stephanie, Lupus Fight the Fight, Erika's 5K, Bran's Lupey Fans, Delta Love, Team Delgadillo, Mel's Lupies, Angela's Team, Super Lupers, OCWALC, Christine Van Horn, Team Hope, Brandy Gilbert, BPC Team, Kelly's Rose, Team Lori, ABCD Team, Team Cindy, Janet's Joggers, Walkettes, The Lupunators, Conejo Valley Supporters, Lava Lovers, Gabriel Bestazos, Sandra Robles, Cynthia Crisan, Angela Crisan, Donna Lain, Leticia Barrios, Sabrina Serrano, Andrea Lain-Ruffino, Lori Roman, Jacylyn Sales-Palijo, Danielle Sanchez, Zari Robles, Janet McDonald, Lauren Mendoza, Birthe Lauchengco, Mary Weyand, Janette Garcia, Kassi Greene, Jessica Web, Dominic Dolories, Jennifer Owens, Kevan Kwan, Team Lee, May Lee, Tommy Fivestar, Lorie Delgadillo, Lori Robillard, Cassandra Aim, Karrie Crawford, Marian Thompson, Camille Butts, Dawn Reitz, Team Tisa, Joy Beynen, Brandea Hill, Cristina Madrid, Jennifer Owens, Melissa Meril, Lucy Doloiras, Gabriel Betanzos, Laurie Eyestone, Donna Pino, Laurie Aaker, Lori Roman, Derek Hernandez, Barry Chan, Cassandra Aim, Sharon Whitson, Sharon Whitson, Jason Cooper, Leslie Minchihira, Stehapnie Packer, Shannon Peich, Sandra Robles and Tommy Newell.
Our top fundraiser for the year was Catherine Capaldi-over $15,000. Thank you Cathy for your commitment and perseverance. The youngest fundraiser for the year was Kelly Candelario-she raised $1,075 and is only 5 years old. Bravo, Kelly!
Of course this event would not be possible without the dedication of the race committee and their respective agency support. Sheriff Lee Baca, each year the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shines. Once again, they won the award for the agency with the most participants in the category of 500 and above. Thank you for your unrelenting encouragement, resources and commitment. Your active committee staff includes the efforts of Custody Assistants Regina Chavez and Margarita Turpin, along with ASM III Mike Leum, and Deputy Dana Camarillo-they are amazing!
We are also deeply appreciative for the California Highway Patrol and their efforts to make this event succeed. CHP Chief Gary Dominguez thank you for your continued dedication. Year after year, Officer Rene Galindo, does an outstanding job, this year was no exception. We also sincerely appreciate the help of Sergeant Nancy Bower, Officers Armando Perdomo and Scott Wall.
The La Habra Fire Department won the trophy for the most participants in their category-thank you Chief Neilson for providing manpower. Orange County Sheriff's Department once again did a fantastic job with setting up the course. Fritz you are the best! Jim and Tom thank you both for continued support and help.
St. Frances Xavier Church group had the largest non-agency team-congratulations! The Andrea Lain, thank you for all you do. Your hard work does not go unrecognized. Of course, we owe our deep appreciation to the North Los Angeles County Latino Police Officers Association for coming through with so many of the resources needed for our race-thank to the entire board, President Oscar Mejia, VP Joe Gallegos, Treasurer Dana Camarillo, Parliamentarian Pete Cacheiro, the members who participated and their families. Our sponsors Albertson's, The Individual Group, Smog's Plus, Trader Joe's, Jax Market, Costco, Goody, and Snickers Marathon are all enthusiastic, supportive and very generous-thank you all.
A big round of applause for the academy classes that participated in the race-LASD Classes 363, 365, 366, LASD explorer class 79 and OCSD Classes 181, 182 and La Habra Fire Department class 41. Everyone enjoyed them being there! We also appreciate the continued support of Dr. April Lopez and her family. She really is an extraordinary person.
Also, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Stephanie Rodriquez for her vision and willingness to go above and beyond-thank you for airing our PSA's.
And last, but not least, we are grateful to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and his field Deputy Joe Matthews. It is because of their kindness and generosity we are able to have the race at La Mirada Regional Park.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who is involved with this event. Whether you were a volunteer, team leader, fundraiser, runner, walker, sponsor or guest YOU make this race what it is today-one-of-a-kind.
